Successful Fishing Using the Best Mahi Mahi Lures

Mahi mahi are extremely popular with anglers due to the great sport they provide and their delicious taste. Also known as dolphin fish, Mahi can be caught in many ways and choosing the right lures for mahi mahi can be the difference between catching a lot of fish and having a fruitless time. Read More

How to Choose the Best Mahi Lures

Selecting the best mahi trolling lures involves taking a number of factors into consideration:

  1. Color - The natural prey of mahi mahi includes squid and flying fish. They are therefore attracted to lures that are the same color as their prey, typically green or blue. Brighter colors such as orange and pink can also attract their attention and be just as effective. In effect, any bright colors may work, and you may need to experiment to see which is best.
  2. Size - The size of the lure will depend on the size of the fish you’re intending to catch since larger fish will generally be attracted to larger prey while smaller ones will go for something they can manage. Consequently, use the largest mahi lures to catch the biggest species and smaller ones for lesser fish.
  3. Weight - Heavier lures will sink deeper into the water and so will be more effective for larger fish that may be at this level. Lighter lures should be chosen, not only to catch smaller fish, but also if there is no great depth to the water. Additionally, lighter lures tend to be easier to control than heavier ones and so this may also be a consideration.
  4. Shape - Lures that are long and slender tend to attract larger fish that mistake them for flying fish. Alternatively, wider shapes may work better for smaller fish that think they are squid.
  5. Durability - Fishing for mahi mahi will put a lot of strain on your lures so you need to choose ones that will last. Avoid those made from poor-quality materials that will become damaged or break after only a few outings. Instead, use high-quality fishing lures made from hard plastic or metal that will withstand rough use.
  6. Hooks - Large mahi mahi are strong and heavy so you need hooks that are big and strong enough to hold them. Use a size corresponding to what you are trying to catch and also ensure they’re sharp enough to penetrate the fish’s mouth, otherwise, you’ll lose a lot of fish.
  7. Skirt - Some mahi mahi lures have skirts — long pieces of rubber that create movement in the water as they trail behind the lure. This imitates the movement of prey and so can be effective but can become tangled and make the lure harder to control.
